In a series of tweets on Monday, Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) rebuked Republicans for using matters of faith “as an excuse to advance bigotry and barbarism.”
According to The Blaze, Ocasio-Cortez made the accusation after the first day of Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing, where several Republican Senators defended Barrett’s Catholic faith against attacks of “religious bigotry” from the left.
Conversely, Democratic Senators warned that if Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court, Republicans would have the ability to push far-right policies, such as overturning Roe V. Wade, in the name of religious freedom.
Despite defending Barrett’s faith, Ocasio-Cortez proceeded to accuse GOP members of religious hypocrisy, claiming that they would reject Jesus if he appeared before Congress today to present His teachings.
“Sick and tired of Republicans who co-opt faith as an excuse to advance bigotry and barbarism,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. “Fact is, if today Christ himself came to the floor of Congress and repeated his teachings, many would malign him as a radical and eject him from the chamber.”

She included a clip of some remarks she made in February on religious freedom at a House Oversight Hearing.
"Sometimes, especially this body, I feel as though if Christ himself walked through these doors and said what he said thousands of years ago, that we should love our neighbor and our enemy, that we should welcome the stranger, fight for the least of us," Ocasio-Cortez said at the time, "he would be maligned as a radical and rejected from these doors.”
In a later tweet, the New York Congresswoman continued to slam Republicans for using “faith as an excuse” to oppose abortion while they neglect other important issues.
“When politicians use faith as an excuse to pass and uphold laws that seize control of people’s bodies but not guarantee them healthcare, feed the poor, shelter the homeless, or welcome the stranger, you have to wonder if it’s really about faith at all,” she stated.

Ocasio-Cortez also retweeted a post by Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who claimed that religious conservatives would reject the Supreme Court nomination of a Muslim woman because of her religious background.
“Let’s be clear about this: if a Muslim woman was nominated to SCOTUS you would see Republicans lose their mind about her religious background…” Omar tweeted on Monday. “‘Sharia law’ would be trending right now.”
